Meeting Summary
2008 Meeting Overview:
This unique two-day conference held June 2-3, 2008 in Cincinnati, Ohio was the seventh in the series of Blending Conferences held since 2000. Through a series of lectures and workshops, clinicians and researchers were provided an opportunity to examine cutting edge approaches for treating and preventing drug abuse and addiction. These scientific advances ranged from the latest findings on the role of genetics to the Blending Team products addressing motivational interviewing, buprenorphine, and motivational incentives all aimed at helping prevent former drug users from relapsing.
The conference format included four presentations, along with the Eileen Pencer Memorial Lecture delivered this year by Dr. Denise Carise. A total of 24 breakout sessions were conducted as well.
Goals and Objectives:
The goal of the Blending Addiction Science and Treatment Conference was to make the best drug abuse and addiction treatments available to those who need them.
Upon completion of the conference participants were able to:
- Employ bi-directional communication to advance the exchange of ideas among drug abuse and addiction researchers and community treatment providers.
- Recognize research conducted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and its role in the development of science-based practices.
- Identify Blending Team Products and discuss how they may be utilized in the treatment of drug abuse and addictive disorders.
- Cite additional resources for knowledge and skill development of science-based practices.
- Discuss and disseminate science-based practices for the treatment of drug abuse and addictive disorders.
Attendance:
Over 1100 individuals registered to attend the 2008 NIDA Blending Conference, with 809 participants requesting Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Continuing Education Units (CEU). Attendees documented their satisfaction with the experience, adding that the Blending Conference provided a unique opportunity to network with leaders, researchers, and other addiction professionals. Further feedback reported:
- Nearly 75% respondents indicated that they intended to change their clinical practice as a result of attending the Blending Conference.
- 99% indicated that they would recommend a colleague to attend a future NIDA Blending Conference.
