Teens get it: Drugs and alcohol can affect your success in school and your health. When you know the facts about drugs, you can be better prepared to make positive decisions for yourself and share the facts with others, too.

That’s why National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week® (NDAFW) is so important.

NDAFW is a national health observance that links students with scientists and other experts so they can learn the facts about drugs and alcohol. To help spread the word, communities across the United States and around the world hold events during NDAFW.

NIDA provides free materials, including toolits about specific drugs, to help teens and adults plan events for their communities that SHATTER THE MYTHS® about drug use.

NDAFW 2020—the 10th anniversary of NDAFW—will take place March 30 to April 5. It’s not too early to start planning your NDAFW activities. If you’re interested in participating, we’ve got ideas to get you started!

One idea for a fun and engaging activity is an “Addiction and Art” contest.

Art can be a powerful expression of thoughts and feelings around the theme of drugs and addiction. For this activity, you could take one of these approaches:

  1. Teen artists can paint or draw images that represent addiction or living around people who use drugs. Display entries at a school art show. Students can vote on their favorite.
  2. Teens can use their phone cameras to take pictures related to the theme of drug use and addiction, and then create a collage with their photos. Display the images and collages on a page on your school’s website.

For ideas and a toolkit on how to hold an "Addiction and Art" contest, go to the website created by artists who support NIDA’s mission. The site has more than 5,000 images of art by teens and adults.
