Areas Recommended for Future Research Emphasis

  1. Prevalence of specific nutritional/metabolic problems during lipodystrophy;


  2. Role of modified dietary practices for lipodystrophy;


  3. Diet/exercise in lipodystrophy;


  4. Influence of body composition on diabetes and atherosclerosis; linkage of treatment to outcomes;


  5. Role of prevention in glucose intolerance among drug users;


  6. Risks/benefits of micronutrient supplementation;


  7. Bone disease and associated issues;


  8. Surrogate markers of metabolic conditions such as bone disease and atherosclerosis;


  9. Pathophysiology of HIV- and hepatitis associated metabolic complications in drug abusers.


  10. Risk factors for the development of endocrine and metabolic disorders in HIV-infected and uninfected drug abusers worldwide, with emphasis on children and women.
